The case against conservatism

Amy Coney-Barrett's Stolen Seat

So, this is where we are, folks.  We are on the precipice of one of the most earth-moving moments in history.  Mitch McConnell may even go down in flames because of it, along with Lindsey Graham who is polling neck and neck with his Democratic challenger, Jaime Harrison in SOUTH Carolina.  To what "it" am I referring?  Well, obviously I am referring to the theft-engineered by Mitch McConnell- of a Supreme Court Appointment.

If, by some chance, you are not the typical follower of politics, then you may not have heard all the details of this story, but it is 100% true.  In 2016, a full 9 months before election day, Justice Anthony Kennedy retired when, as you know, Barack Obama was President.  Obama, a centrist himself with views that are just slightly left of center, sought a centrist for the court and so he nominated Judge Merrick Garland. A highly qualified Federal Appellate Division Judge who was greeted with skepticism and concern from the more liberal parts of the Democratic party, but who surely would have attracted at least a handful of Republican votes ensuring his seat on the high court.  But, alas, it was not to be.

Senator Mitch McConnell, the Majority Leader and thus controller of what, if any, legislation reaches the floor of the Senate for a vote, refused to hold confirmation hearings for Judge Garland, citing a fucking bullshit "standard" that said no appointments should be made to the supreme court in an election year.  Further, McConnell said the people should have a say in who gets appointed.  Merrick Garland's seat on the court is now occupied by the very controversial Judge Brett Kavanaugh, a man who was very credibly accused of sexual assault by Christine Blasey Ford.  I'm using her full name here because she has made her case against Kavanaugh on live network television broadcast to hundreds of millions of households in the United States.  At the time of Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings the nation was still in a state of shock and dismay over the election of an obvious racist, misogynist, xenophobic, Islamophobic, serial sexual predator.

In the time since the Kavanaugh appointment, which was sadly affirmed along partisan lines, things have only gone downhill from here.  Trump got yet another supreme court nomination when the conservative firebrand Justice Antonin Scalia died suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack.  So, he nominated Judge Neal Gorsuch, another rather extreme right-wing appointment to replace Scalia who was perhaps the most extreme Justice on the court with the possible exception of Clarence Thomas.  That put the balance on the court at 5 conservatives, 4 liberals.

Then the unthinkable happened.  Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had battled cancer off and on for years, finally succumbed to the disease and died on September 18,2020. On her death bed, she told her granddaughter, "My most fervent wish is that my replacement be nominated after the election."

Donald Trump's response?  "Someone made that up, she didn't say that on her death bed!"  A fairly typical response for a man with no conscience or empathy.  Donald Trump is the definition of a sociopath.  He cares about one thing and one thing only: himself.  That's it.  Everything he does, every move he makes is all in service to his life-long self-delusion that he's some kind of business wizard.  The truth of the matter is, he's gone bankrupt 3 times, escaping hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.  His actual record as a businessman is one of an abysmal failure who squandered hundreds of millions of dollars left to him by his father Fred Trump.

The Apprentice - the reality TV show built around Donald Trump's very carefully crafted public persona of a tremendously successful business owner- literally saved Trump's empire from another collapse.  He made a ton of money from The Apprentice and he invested most of that money in golf courses you may have heard of.  Every single one of them was losing money until he became POTUS.  Now they're all booked in perpetuity, often by US government employees looking to curry favor with the president.

As is often the case, I've gone off on a few tangents here about Donald Trump because let's be honest, folks, he truly is a gigantic piece of fucking shit.  Regardless of how you feel about Joe Biden or the Democrats in general look deep inside of yourself, to your true heart and ask that true heart if all of the cruelty-by-design policies like child separation at the border are really the way you think people -ANY PEOPLE- should be treated.  Ask that true heart if it agrees with Donald Trump that in a confrontation between Torch-Carrying Racists who chanted "Jews will not replace us!" and counter-protesters who were standing against racism and hate that there are "very fine people on both sides."

If you agree with that shit, then you should vote for Donald Trump.  But more importantly, if you agree with that shit, then enjoy your racist asshole leader's ignorant rhetoric while he still has the presidential megaphone because the decent people in this country are coming to remove you assholes from power.
